BIDDEFORD — Firefighters from Biddeford and Saco and three other departments prevented a fire that started in a barn on Tuesday afternoon from spreading to an attached farmhouse.

Biddeford’s Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Duross said the damage could have been a lot worse if not for the quick response to the fire at 25 River Road in Biddeford.

Duross said a family of eight lives on the farm, which is in rural Biddeford near the Dayton town line.

“The barn was well involved by the time we arrived on scene,” Duross said. “But we were able to put a lot of water on the fire to prevent it from spreading. It was a very labor-intensive effort.”

There are no fire hydrants in the neighborhood so crews extended lines from a water holding tank about 3,600 feet from the property.

The cause of the fire, which does not appear to be suspicious, remains under investigation. It was reported just after 3 p.m.

No one was injured.
