A man is in custody after allegedly threatening to kill a Monmouth police officer and creating a standoff that closed a major thoroughfare for more than three hours Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
Around 11 p.m. Tuesday, Monmouth police Officer Richard Alexander stopped a vehicle on Route 202 for a motor vehicle violation, according to a news release from police Chief Kevin Mulherin. The driver, Douglas McCaig, 67, of Greene and Vero Beach, Fla., got angry and drove off, nearly hitting Alexander. Alexander pulled the vehicle over again, and McCaig “made threats to harm himself and officers,” according to police.

Police then shut down Route 202 between Blue Road and Route 132 for 3 1/2 hours. The Maine State Police Tactical Team was called in, and McCaig was eventually taken into custody. The incident involved Monmouth Fire, Winthrop Police and rescue, as well as sheriff deputies from Kennebec and Androscoggin counties.
McCaig has been arrested on charges of failing to stop for a police officer, driving to endanger, operating under the influence, criminal threatening, refusing to submit to arrest and creating a police standoff. He is expected to make an initial court appearance Friday.
After being evaluated at MaineGeneral Medical Center, McCaig was taken to the Kennebec County jail.
