A fire destroyed a barn in Cape Elizabeth on Sunday night but did not threaten a nearby home at 83 Wells Road, the fire chief said.

Cape Elizabeth Fire Chief Peter Gleeson said the fire was spotted by a town ambulance crew around 8:45 p.m. while it was responding to an emergency call. Residents of the Wells Road home called authorities a few moments later after hearing an explosion in the barn.

Gleeson said there were no vehicles parked inside the barn at the time, but several pieces of equipment, including a snowblower and welding equipment, were destroyed.

The cause of the fire, which does not appear to be suspicious, remains under investigation, Gleeson said. More than 30 volunteer firefighters responded to the call.
