George H.W. and Barbara Bush celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Tuesday. The former president tweeted: “Seventy years ago this very day, Barbara Pierce of Rye, NY made me the happiest, and luckiest, man on earth.”

Barbara Bush, 88, often jokes that her successful life is a result of marrying well, according to her biography at bush41.org.

They met over Christmas vacation at a dance when she was 16 and he was a student at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.

A family spokesman told the Houston Chronicle in an email that the couple would mark the occasion together at home in a low-key way.

The former president, who is 89, was released from a Houston hospital last month after spending several days under observation for breathing difficulties.
