While a bit of light snow is causing some slick driving today, we still haven’t seen a major snowstorm this winter. Of course it did snow a lot in some areas just prior to Thanksgiving, but that early season snowstorm has just been a memory most of this cold season. The current snow will be over by about noon, so by the time you read this the sun could even be back out.

December was mild and wet and January has been cold and dry. I think this is about to change. The storm track in December took systems to our west and allowed a lot of warm and moist air to flow into the area. This prevented snow, but gave us plenty of rain.

This month, at least so far, cold and dry air has kept storms to our south and prevented any significant snow. There are a few signs that there will be one or two storms in the upcoming 10 day period that will threaten New England with more significant snow, which is greater than 4 inches.

The difference between my thinking about the past 10 days and the next 10 days is the way the jet stream will become more active as we head into the second half of January. Predicting if a snow storm will hit anywhere in New England this far away is just an educated guess. Storms are like little whirlpools in big fluid of air and their exact behavior isn’t easily forecast so far in advance. But, weather models can start to indicated more of these swirls of energy in the patter and show an increase in the risk they impact our area.

On Monday night a storm will graze the area with the chance for some snow or snow showers and then later next week, about Thursday or Friday another chance for snow is indicated.

Another cold shot of arctic air is with us for Saturday. Highs will remain in the teens and 20s and it’s going to feel and look very much like the middle of winter. Sunday, readings moderate a bit, but all areas remain below freezing. We have to wait until Monday for highs to break the freezing point and then it’s right back into the chill for Tuesday.

If you are looking for an early end to the winter, you might want to wait a while. There will likely be a break in the cold around the 18-24th of this month, but there is still plenty of winter to be had.
