It’s hard to believe Kyle MacLachlan was barely 30 when he played the mystical Special Agent Dale Cooper on ABC’s “Twin Peaks.”

But the actor, now 55, will return to the fictional small town in Washington state to, presumably, drink coffee and investigate stuff.

“I’m very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of ‘Twin Peaks,’ ” he said. “May the forest be with you.”

MacLachlan is the first, only and arguably most significant “Twin Peaks” cast member to confirm participation in the reboot. Nine new episodes of the show directed by David Lynch will air on Showtime in 2016.

“I expect there to be lots of people from the original cast back,” said David Nevins, Showtime’s president.

MacLachlan, of course, has not been silent since “Twin Peaks” went off the air more than two decades ago. He’s appeared in “Desperate Housewives,” “Portlandia” and, of course, that film people love to make fun of: “Showgirls.”

Lynch shared the news of the star’s return on Twitter:

“Welcome back to Twin Peaks Special Agent Dale Cooper! Kyle MacLachlan returns in ’16 … “
