Dan Guiliani, South Portland track: Guiliani won the shot put with a school-record throw of 58 feet, 71/2 inches at the Dartmouth Relays in Hanover, New Hampshire. His throw was more than 4 feet longer than that of the second-place finisher, and almost 8 feet better than the winning throw by Michael Pino of Scarborough at the Class A state meet last year. Guiliani ranks ninth in the country.

HONORABLE MENTION

Shane Cleveland, Noble basketball: Cleveland hit five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points as Noble upset Thornton Academy 63-56 last Friday night. It was the Knights’ second win of the season.

Brandon Sprague, Wiscasset basketball: Sprague scored 29 points with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals to spark the Wolverines past Carrabec, 73-58.

Stephen Alex, Portland basketball: Alex scored 11 of his 25 points in the first quarter Tuesday night as the Bulldogs improved to 9-0 with a 59-35 victory against Bonny Eagle.

GIRLS

Kate Hall, Lake Region track: Hall set a Maine all-time best by cracking the 7-second barrier (6.99) in the 55-meter dash at a Western Maine Conference meet last Friday. She ranks second in the country in the 55 and remains No. 1 in the long jump after leaping 19-71/2 at the Rhode Island Classic on Dec. 27.

HONORABLE MENTION

Tasia Titherington, Deering basketball: Titherington scored 17 points with four 3-pointers and was the only Ram in double figures in a 44-43 victory at Gorham. She also had 13 points with four 3-pointers in a 60-21 win over Massabesic.

Julia Champagne, Brunswick basketball: The Dragons’ pace-setter scored at least 21 points in three games. Her 23-point, 11-rebound effort keyed a 52-35 victory at Mt. Ararat. She scored 22 points in a 64-40 victory at Messalonskee and 21 points in a 52-47 overtime loss to Mt. Blue.

Julia Quinn, Fryeburg Academy basketball: Quinn scored 20 points as the Raiders knocked off previously undefeated Gray-New Gloucester, 48-41. The Raiders improved to 4-7.
