ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland — Carl Klingberg scored 37 seconds into overtime to give the St. John’s IceCaps a 3-2 win over the Portland Pirates on Saturday at the Mile One Centre.

Klingberg was hit by a slapshot from teammate John Albert, but the puck dropped right to his stick and he put the puck into an open net to give the IceCaps a series win in the three-game set against the Pirates.

Klingberg also scored the winner in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Pirates on Wednesday.

Portland’s Jordan Szwarz had tied the game with 6.7 seconds left in the third period when he put in a feed from Brendan Shinnimin after the Pirates pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.

Former UMaine defenseman Will O’Neill had a goal and assist for the IceCaps. O’Neill skated to the right circle and beat goalie Louis Domingue to the high stick side at 9:33 of the first. The goal was O’Neill’s sixth and came 1:32 after the IceCaps killed off a 5-on-3 advantage for the Pirates.

Chase Balisy scored for St. John’s on the power play for his ninth goal at 1:41 of the second. O’Neill earned his 14th assist.

Dylan Reese got Portland’s first goal and his sixth of the season at the other end of the second, banking a shot off the post that got behind goalie Connor Hellebuyck and over the line with 1:42 left. The goal light did not go on, but referee Keith Kaval signaled goal, and it was confirmed by official video review.

Domingue made 35 saves for the Pirates, who are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games.
