On this Friday evening I wanted to update the blog from this morning. I have to confess I was quite nervous about forecasting such a small amount of snow for most areas, but it appears it will work out quite close. If we see and inch or two of snow overnight the totals in Portland since it began snowing will reach 5 inches or a bit more, a lot less than some of you said you heard in the forecast.

I’ll leave you with one new image tonight. It’s the hi-res model forecast for the amount of snow from about 6PM until tomorrow morning at 9AM. Notice greater Portland only gets about an inch.

If you live over far eastern Maine expect more periods of snow, some of it heavy. Another storm will bring a chance of snow Monday. Look for updates this weekend on that next nor’easter in our active pattern. I’ll also update on Twitter @growingwisdom

Afternoon Blog 11AM
This afternoon there is more snow in the forecast, but if you were hoping for a lot more snow, it’s not in the cards.

The southern and western edge of the snow will likely just clip areas from Augusta to Belfast where I have forecast the most snow east of this line. This is a very close call. These situations are marginal and the snow could easily miss these areas as well. Less likely is that the snow backs up further down the coastline and into Portland.

As of 11 a.m. a new storm was taking shape over southern New England. My current thinking is this system will develop too late to bring much snow to areas south of the Kennebec Valley. It doesn’t mean no snow, just not the foot you may have heard about in some forecasts.

The map above shows where the new storm is forming. Earlier models had this storm getting stronger earlier and closer to the southern Maine coastline. The latest trends take this further east before it becomes a big storm.

The snow will end tomorrow morning with very windy and cold conditions throughout the day. Highs will only be in the teens and with the strong winds it’s going feel as if it’s below zero all day. If you are running Saturday errands or planning on going skiing or skating be sure to dress warmly.

Sunday is a better day with less wind and temperatures mostly in the 20s. I would choose Sunday as my ski day.

The next storm for Monday appears it will come close enough to bring some snow to at least the coastline. Forecasts over the weekend will change so you will definitely want to stay tuned and follow my updates here and on Twitter @growingwisdom
