A home in New Gloucester was destroyed by fire Thursday.
Capt. Scott Doyle said the New Gloucester Fire and Rescue Department was called by a passer-by around 3:07 p.m. after the person saw smoke coming from the eaves of the home at 329 Bennett Road.
About 30 firefighters from New Gloucester and five neighborhing towns responded. The fire was knocked down within an hour, said Doyle, in part because the homeowner had cleared his driveway and paths of snow.
“Had they not been (cleared), firefighters would have had a greater struggle,” Doyle said.
The homeowner was not in the house when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
