A natural gas leak Tuesday morning in Portland was caused by a plow that hit a meter.

Unitil crews and the Portland Fire Department contained the gas leak at 411 Marginal Way by 10 a.m. Tuesday. The leak was reported at an empty warehouse, so no evacuations were required.

Alec O’Meara, a Unitil spokesman, said the issue was caused by a plow that damaged a meter. He had no additional details about the incident, including whether any buildings were evacuated.

O’Meara said people who are plowing should know the location of their meter and avoid pushing snow against it.

“It’s important to make sure your vent and meter are clear of snow and ice,” he said.
