Two men were pulled from icy waters off Monroe Island near Owls Head when their fishing boat sank Saturday morning.

The Coast Guard said it received a distress call about 9 a.m. from a crew member aboard the Loretta, which is homeported on Matinicus Island. The crew member said the boat was taking on water south of Monroe Island. A few minutes later, the crew member said the boat was being abandoned.

The Coast Guard launched a 47-foot life boat, but the Capt. Charles Philbrook, a Maine state ferry on the Rockland-Vinalhaven route, heard the distress call and launched a small boat, which pulled the men from the 37-degree water. The air temperature was 5 degrees.

The men were then transferred to the Coast Guard boat, which took the two to the Coast Guard station in Rockland.

According to the Coast Guard, the two men were treated by a local EMS crew, but were uninjured.

The Coast Guard did not release the names of the men.
