BANGOR – Maine’s state geologist says the water content of snow in the state is higher than normal, which raises the potential for flooding in the spring.

Maine Public Broadcasting Network reports geologist Robert Marvinney is monitoring the water content of the snow. A survey this month said there was at least 3 to 5 inches of water content in the snow, with western mountain areas having up to 7 or 8 inches.

Parts of the state have seen unprecedented amounts of snow this winter.

National Weather Service hydrologist Tom Hawley says the warm temperatures, rain and winds of spring create ideal conditions for flooding.

Spring begins in a month, on March 20.
