A North Yarmouth woman was taken to a hospital by ambulance Monday after the Amtrak Downeaster train collided with her car in Yarmouth.

The collision near the corner of North and Leighton roads was reported at 12:30 p.m.

Kathleen Estabrook, 34, was driving a 2011 Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle north on North Road when it collided with the train, which was headed to Freeport, said Yarmouth Police Chief Michael Morrill.

Estabrook was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she was treated and released, said Yarmouth Fire Chief Michael Robitaille.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by Yarmouth police, Amtrak and Pan Am Railways, which manages the track. That intersection has safety gates, one of which was broken in the crash, Morrill said. Trains typically go about 50 mph on that stretch of track.

The passenger train was delayed 60 to 90 minutes because of the crash, Morrill said. He was not told of any injuries on the train.
