NORTH YARMOUTH – Built c. 1800 by the prominent Lufkin family, whose other houses in the area include the Pettengill Farmhouse in South Freeport (a building that now belongs to the Freeport Historical Society) this lovely Colonial home has been sensitively restored by its longtime owners, so that its original charm and character are preserved, even as all contemporary comforts are provided.

The Lufkin House also bears the whimsical name “Fawn Trickle,” as bestowed by the family of Col. Skillins (another high-profile-name owner) after the little stream and waterfall that form out back in the spring, and add their timeless music to the peace of the private Japanese garden. This fairly recent creation by designer Masa Seko features a rock garden and patio, and even a fountain, and is a haven for birds, butterflies and other wildlife.

The private, pastoral grounds, totaling 5.5 acres, are enclosed by mature evergreens on three sides.

Human visitors can enter the garden from the deck off the beautifully bright great room, which effects a natural transition to the outdoors and measures some 500 square feet. Like the deck and the garage, it is a 2002 addition by the present owners, who have been faithful stewards of the property throughout their three decades. Also significant among a host of updates are new gutters, shingles and cedar siding; rebuilt chimney and fireplaces; replacement windows; additional insulation; stone walls and cobblestone walkways, and a Vermont Castings gas stove in the kitchen (dine-in, thanks to a delightful breakfast nook).

The kitchen’s modern attributes also include stainless-and-black appliances, a huge floor-to-ceiling pantry, and granite counters; its heritage lives on in the brick hearth with its bake oven, wide pumpkin pine flooring, and the “parson’s closet,” in which donations of foodstuffs were left long ago.

Most of the bricks in the home’s four wood-burning fireplaces are “revitalized” wood-fired bricks from the Royal River Brickyard. Other period details – hardware, wainscoting, front-staircase bannister, and trim woodwork, to name just a few – are perfectly preserved.
