Tony Reilly, the Portland actor seriously injured in a Christmas week auto accident that killed his wife, is recuperating from his injuries in a New Jersey rehabilitation facility.

Reilly lost a leg, and his wife, Susan, was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on the Massachusetts Turnpike on Dec. 23. They were traveling from Maine to a family Christmas gathering in the New York City area.

The families issued a joint statement this week.

“The Reilly and Camardo families have been very touched by the outpouring of love and support that we have received from the Portland community, especially from Tony and Susan’s theater friends and colleagues. The sudden and tragic loss of our beloved Susan has shocked and saddened so many people from New York to Maine,” the statement said.

Reilly suffered multiple injuries. Surgeons amputated one leg, and were able to save the other. He is receiving treatment at a rehabilitation facility near a sister’s home in New Jersey. Reilly was transferred from a hospital in Massachusetts to the New Jersey recovery center in January.

The statement said Reilly faces a long recuperation. Plans for a memorial for Susan Reilly will be made when Tony Reilly is able to participate, according to the statement. “Your prayers for Susan and your continued thoughts and well wishes for Tony’s healing and recovery are greatly appreciated.”

The Reillys co-founded the American Irish Repertory Ensemble in Portland.
