FAIRFIELD — A man died after he doused himself with gasoline Saturday morning and set himself on fire in his car on U.S. Route 201, a state official said.

The man was identified as William Wakefield, 61, of Skowhegan, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

McCausland said Wakefield called a friend to say he was going to kill himself. The fire in the car, which was parked in a rest area along Route 201, was reported by several passers-by just before 10 a.m., McCausland said.

When firefighters arrived on scene the car was engulfed in flames, said Fairfield Police Chief Tom Gould.
