BIDDEFORD — Biddeford firefighters were called to a fire at a three-unit apartment building at 261 Elm St. just after midnight Monday morning.

When firefighters arrived they saw flames coming from windows on the third floor. Crews made their way up to the third floor, pulling hose lines behind them, and put the fire out in about 20 minutes.

Deputy Chief Kevin Duross said roughly a dozen residents made it out safely though they have been displaced by smoke and water damage throughout the building.

One cat perished in the fire, Duross said.

The fire started in a laundry room but Duross said the cause is undeterrmined and still under investigation.
