Portland firefighters responded Monday morning to a gas leak at a commercial building at 470 Riverside St.

An employee at the building, which had been unoccupied over the weekend, smelled gas upon arriving at work Monday morning and called firefighters.

The leak was found at a service pipe that had apparently broken under a deep pile of snow. A substantial amount of gas had leaked into the building, and it took firefighters about 10 minutes to dig out the broken pipe, according to Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Neat.

Neat said that broken gas pipes have “definitely been more of an issue this winter” because of the heavy accumulation of snow. He encourages building owners to shovel out their gas service pipes and be aware of potential falling ice, which can break outdoor pipes.
