Three cars burned and another three had significant damage in what fire officials say appears to be an accidental fire at a parking lot in Westbrook on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to 90 Bridge St., a parking area alongside the Dana Warp Mill, at 11:10 a.m., for what was reported as a single car fire, said Fire Chief Andrew Turcotte.

When they arrived, firefighters found two cars on fire and a third starting to burn with many other cars nearby in the parking lot of between 75 and 100 cars. Firefighters, who initially responded with a single engine because of the nature of the first reports, were able to get the fire knocked down in about 20 minutes. Some firefighters had to work to keep pedestrians and car owners clear of the area, Turcotte said.

Nobody was injured.

The fire destroyed two Honda sedans and a Chevrolet sedan. Three other cars had significant damage and three more had very minor damage, he said.

Turcotte said the cause of the fire has not been determined but it appears as if improperly disposed of smoking materials may be to blame.
