PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Brian Doran hit two doubles and drove in three runs, and Danny Diaz had two singles and three RBI to lead the University of Maine to a 9-2 victory against Mt. St. Mary’s in a nonconference college baseball game Tuesday.

Later in the day, the Black Bears (3-9) allowed two runs in the eighth inning and fell to Ball State, 8-7.

Diaz hit a two-run single in the second and an RBI single in the fourth, and Doran doubled in a run in the fourth and drove in two with his double in the seventh.

Shane Bussey hit two run-scoring singles and Jeff Gelinas pitched six strong innings for the win against the Mountaineers (3-3).

BALL STATE 8, MAINE 7: Matt Eppers hit an RBI single and scored the winning run as the Cardinals (6-5) scored twice in the eighth inning and held off the Black Bears at Port Charlotte, Florida.

Jake Osborne and Sam Balzano each singled in a run in the ninth, and Maine had the bases loaded when the game ended.

The Black Bears scored four runs in the seventh inning on singles by Diaz and Christian Garabedian, and bases-loaded walks by Shane Bussey and Luke Morrill.

Kevin Stypulkowski scored Maine’s other run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 15, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 6: Jack Allard and Jack Strain each had three goals as the Bobcats (1-1) defeated the Nor’easters (1-1) at Lewiston.

Kyle Weber and Burke Smith each finished with two goals for Bates.

Dan Auger had three goals, and Geoff Bruno, Shamus Higginbottom and Andrew Curro also scored for UNE.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 17, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: Moriah Greenstein had four goals and two assists as the Bobcats (2-1) handled the Huskies (0-1) at Lewiston.

Greenstein scored twice in the opening minute and Bates scored six times in the first 4:45 in building a 12-0 halftime lead.

Teal Otley added three goals for Bates, and Allison Dewey, Annie Duke and Joanie Oates added two apiece. Anh Nguyen scored twice for the Huskies.

SOFTBALL

SOUTH FLORIDA 7, MAINE 0: Karla Claudio and Sam Greiner combined on a one-hitter, striking out four apiece, as the Bulls (11-7) downed the Black Bears (4-6) at Tampa, Florida.

Maine starter Alexis Bogdanovich was tagged for six earned runs, including five during a six-run third inning, after entering with a 1.30 ERA.

Rachel Carlson broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the sixth.
