Re: “Gov. King or Gen. Chamberlain: Who should represent Maine in Capitol?” (Feb. 27):
I’m pleased to see Joshua Chamberlain and mention of his “fix bayonets” order back in the news. It’s military legend as it should be.
At the Battle of Gettysburg, after three days of fighting, both sides were about out of ammunition. Commanding the “high ground,” Chamberlain was knowledgeable of a slight edge called “gravity.”
His astuteness as to the damage a cannonball can inflict was also revealed when he ordered his two brothers, who wanted to fight side by side with him, to the flanks, quipping, “Let’s not give Mother a bad day.”
