PARIS — A Rumford man has been ordered to repay the state almost $36,000 after pleading guilty to falsifying his tax returns by claiming he lived in New Hampshire.

Scott Knowlton was indicted on three felony counts of tax evasion and six misdemeanor counts of failure to pay taxes, but under a plea agreement, the felonies were amended to misdemeanors and the 57-year-old Knowlton pleaded guilty to all charges. He was given a one-year jail sentence, with all but 45 days suspended.

The Sun Journal reports that prosecutors say between 2006 and 2008 Knowlton claimed his wife’s parents’ house in New Hampshire as his legal residence.

Sentence was stayed until May 1.
