Portland police are investigating an attempted armed robbery that happened Tuesday night at the Gulf Express Mart at 754 Congress St.

Lt. Robert Ridge said a white man, wearing a handkerchief over his face, entered the convenience store around 10:30 p.m, walked up to a male clerk, pointed a handgun at the clerk and pulled the hammer as if he were going to fire the weapon. The clerk described the gun as something from the old West.

Ridge said the man apparently changed his mind and fled from the store. Though he did not steal any money, Ridge said he could still be charged with robbery.

The clerk was not injured. The suspect’s image, which was caught on the store’s video surveillance system, showed him wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt with dark pants. He is about 5 feet 6 inches tall.
