Nearly 13,000 customers of Central Maine Power Co. lost their electrical service Tuesday night after a cold weather front moved into Maine packing extremely powerful wind gusts.
According to the company’s website, most of the outages were concentrated in Androscoggin County, which had just over 6,000 outages around 10 p.m., including the entire town of Lisbon. Cumberland County had the second most outages reported, with 1,742, and York County had 1,368 customers without power.
By 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, total outages were down to 2,400, with only 118 in Androscoggin County, 227 in Cumberland County and 148 in York County. No outages were reported in Lisbon. Lincoln County, however, still had 1,285 outages, and Somerset County had 490.
Bob Marine, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray, said Portland was experiencing the strongest wind gusts – 53 mph. But most of southern and western Maine was getting hit with gusts ranging between 35 and 45 mph. The gusts were expected to subside after midnight but may pick up Wednesday morning.
“It’s going to blow pretty good on Wednesday,” Marine said. “It’s not a steady wind. It’s a pounding wind.”
