The Maine Sheriff’s Association, holding its annual meeting in Portland Wednesday and Thursday, is presenting awards for deputy and corrections officer of the year as well as valor awards and other citations.

Oxford County Deputy Christina McAllister and Waldo County Deputy Nicholas Oettinger were selected as deputies of the year and York County Cpl. Steven Kurtz was selected as corrections officer of the year.

Valor awards are being presented to Piscataquis County Sgt. Michael Gould and Kennebec County Deputy William Johnson and the civilian valor award to Roberta and Edward Sorensen of Naples in Cumberland County.

Other awards include:

Employee of the year, Cumberland County Sheriff’s executive assistant Kelly Maines; citizenship award, Norman “Ziggy” Lawrence, Kennebec County; presidential citation, Mike Wardrop, federal Drug Enforcement Administration resident agent in charge for Maine; manager of the year Knox County Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.

The awards are being presented at the banquet Thursday. The keynote speaker is Dr. Kevin Gilmartin, an expert on police mental health awareness.

The meeting is being attended by sheriffs and other staff from the state’s 16 counties.
