Biddeford police are investigating the theft of four paintings from the Heartwood College of Art, which leases space in a renovated textile mill off Main Street.

Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk said the college reported the theft Friday. The artwork is valued at about $400, but college and mill officials have indicated in statements on Heartwood’s Facebook page that it’s not the value that disturbs them.

“They belong to Heartwood and are of the most recent master’s student work,” the college posted on Facebook. “We would like the work back and for this disrespectful activity to stop.”

Fisk said the Pepperell Mill has given police a surveillance photograph that clearly shows the suspect’s face. A man in his 20s or 30s is seen clutching four paintings, which he removed from a wall in a second-floor hallway in building 17 of the North Dam Mill, part of the Pepperell Mill campus.

Scott Thibeau, a spokesman for the Pepperell Mill, posted a plea on Heartwood College’s Facebook page asking anyone who recognizes the suspect to contact mill management or Biddeford police at 282-5127.

Heartwood College moved in 2012 from Kennebunk to the mill in Biddeford, where it leases about 3,000 square feet. In January, the school graduated its first master of fine arts students.
