The mascot for Brody’s Favorite Cookie is a cute little Boston terrier who stares out from the bag of dog treats with one of those deep, soulful gazes.

It’s a calculated look that says “You left me alone for two hours today. I so deserve a cookie.”

Or “I piddled on the floor because I didn’t want to disturb you, saving you the hassle of taking me for an extra walk. Give me a cookie.”

Brody’s Favorite Cookies are made in Durham by Mz. B’s Back Woods Kitchen, and the label says they contain “organic, natural, gluten free ingredients.” (Yes, apparently dogs can get celiac disease too.) The ingredients list includes organic white rice flour, natural garbanzo/fava flour, organic crunchy almond butter, water, organic unsulphured blackstrap molasses, organic ground flaxseed meal, organic cinnamon, and vitamin E.

We tested Brody’s Favorite Cookie on one of our favorite dogs, a goldendoodle named Gryff who turns 4 today. (Happy Birthday, fella! Good boy!) He snapped it right up, devoured it with obvious relish, and in an unprecedented gesture, jumped up and planted his paws on his mom’s chest to beg for another.

That’s the upside. The downside? We bought our package of treats at the Portland Food Co-op and experienced a bit of sticker shock when we got back to the office and checked the receipt. A bag of 20-25 treats will set you back $15.

That’s a little ruff.
