The Resilience Hub, a Portland-based nonprofit that works to build resilient communities, is looking for homeowners and community groups to host Permablitzes in the greater Portland area. Something like an old-fashioned barn raising, a Permablitz is a daylong work party in which a group of volunteers help implement permaculture design. To avoid sounding like those circular dictionary definitions (“melodic” defined as “melodious”), let us spell out permaculture design: a type of design that is ecologically based; that takes into account water use, agriculture systems and green engineering and architecture; and that to some extent mimics natural systems.

The group is looking for hosts in Portland, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Westbrook, Scarborough and Falmouth. Among other qualifications (such as a bathroom on the property and a willingness to cook something tasty to feed volunteers), hosts should have volunteered at previous Permablitzes; this is the third year Resilience Hub has organized them. In a press release, the nonprofit asked potential hosts: “Have you been interested in implementing a permaculture design but didn’t know where to start? Are you interested in exploring ways that your space or property can support the wider community?”
