Re: “Portland set to carry out disposable-bag fees, polystyrene foam ban” (March 17):

Kudos to the city of Portland for passing ordinances that will “impose a fee on disposable plastic or paper shopping bags” and “ban many businesses from using polystyrene food and beverage containers.”

Unfortunately, these environmentally conscious policies are long overdue, but that does not change the fact that Portland deserves credit for being the first city in Maine to have the courage to put them in place. It is a rare treat in recent years to see some forward thinking in our state; every citizen should be proud of these actions.

Finally, the flow of thousands of plastic bags exiting supermarkets daily in carts piled high will slow and the use of Styrofoam containers will decrease, which will improve our health and that of our environment.

Thank you, Portland, my hat is off to you!
