Sophomore Christian Ejiga is transferring from the University of Maine men’s basketball team, Coach Bob Walsh said Tuesday.

Ejiga, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 2.0 points and 1.7 rebounds last season. The native of Nigeria, who played high school basketball at the Hyde School, averaged 2.9 points and 2.5 rebounds as a freshman, when he started seven games.

“He and I had had good discussions throughout the year just about his progress and our standards and the expectations,” said Walsh, who recently completed his first season at Maine.

“It may have been a difficult fit. He’s a really good kid. He’s a really good teammate. I just think things were very, very different than what he was used to.

“We’re doing everything we can to help him (find a new school).”

Ejiga is the only Black Bear player so far to decide to transfer after a 3-27 season. Forward Ethan Mackey decided to leave the team during the season to focus on academics.
