My wife and I were dining Sunday evening at Petite Jacqueline in Portland. About halfway through our meal, a young couple (he was dressed in jeans, a plaid flannel shirt and a knit wool cap) sat down a couple of tables away from us, ordered and ate a dessert, then left.

When we later asked for our check, our server told us the young couple had paid for our meal. All she’d learned was that they were from the South, visiting relatives in Maine, and engaging in random acts of kindness.

It was a wonderful gesture in any case; however, as we were celebrating my 75th birthday, an event unknown to anyone in the restaurant, we were elated at this particularly auspicious beginning to my fourth quarter-century.

If you know our benefactors, please convey our sincere thanks. And pay it forward.
