Red Claws lose a late lead, fall to Canton, 90-88

Kevin Olekaibe scored 24 points and the Canton Charge rallied from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter for a 90-88 victory against the visiting Maine Red Claws in a D-League game Wednesday night.

The Red Claws were held scoreless over the final 4:42, missing six field goals.

A layup by Stephen Holt with three minutes left and a free throw by James Singleton in the closing seconds was enough to give Canton (39-18) its fourth straight victory. The Charge are second to the Red Claws (33-15) in the Atlantic Division and will be the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

JUNIOR PIRATES: The Portland Junior Pirates U18 boys won USA Hockey’s Tier II 1A championship, rallying from a two-goal deficit to beat the Charlotte (North Carolina) Checkers 3-2 in overtime on a Matthew Brooks goal in the title game in Troy, Michigan.

The Junior Pirates won five games in the tournament, outscoring opponents, 33-4.

In the final, the Junior Pirates fell behind 2-0 early in the third period. Brooks, who is from Brunswick, scored at 6:12 from Patrick Daniels (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Carsten Kocek (North Berwick). The Junior Pirates tied it with 12 seconds remaining in regulation on a power-play goal by Kyle Woodruff (Brunswick), from Daniels and Jordan Tracy (Bangor).

Brooks then intercepted a pass in overtime and scored at 12:53.

Connor Minch (Manchester, New Hampshire) made 18 saves for the Junior Pirates.

CANDLEPINS: Bob Gould of Hobbs Lucky Lanes in South Paris and Janice Link of the Big 20 in Scarborough won senior state championships at the finals at Saco Valley in Fryeburg.

The finals came after a five-event statewide series that winnowed the field to the final 12 men and women.

Gould shot a five-game handicapped total of 780, finishing 10 pins ahead of Paul Deschenes of Saco Valley. Link totaled 744; Carol Goodwin of the Big 20 was second with 728.

TENNIS

MIAMI OPEN: Seven-time champion Serena Williams overcame shaky play for her 700th career victory, beating Sabine Lisicki 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3 to reach the semifinals at Key Biscayne, Florida.

Williams’ opponent Thursday will be Simona Halep, who defeated Sloane Stephens in straight sets.

HORSE RACING

SANTA ANITA DERBY: Undefeated Dortmund drew the No. 1 post position and is the early 3-5 favorite for the $1 million race Saturday at Arcadia, California.

The 3-year-old colt is 5-0 for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who also will saddle One Lucky Dane in the West Coast’s major prep for the Kentucky Derby. One Lucky Dane will break from the No. 2 post in the six-horse field.

WOOD MEMORIAL: Daredevil was made the 9-5 favorite in a field of seven for the $1 million Wood Memorial on Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York.

PREP SCHOOL

BOYS’ LACROSSE: Brad Simas scored with 1:35 left as Berwick Academy came from behind to defeat Dexter Southfield 10-9 at South Berwick.

Simas had four goals and an assist for the Bulldogs. Drew Hale added three goals, and Derek Muse, Luke McNamara and Joey Lazzaro also scored for Berwick.
