BIDDEFORD — Colby College scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning Wednesday and downed the University of New England 3-2 in a nonconference softball game.

Sydney Helmbrecht led off the first for UNE (7-8) with a single, stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch.

Colby (4-7) responded when Emily Schatz lined a double, scoring Meghan Lewia.

Tori Sansone went 2 for 2 with a run for the Mules. Lewia finished 1 for 3 with a run.

Julia Saul of Colby allowed four hits, walking three and striking out five.

Abby Lambert of UNE gave up five hits.

EASTERN CONNECTICUT SWEEPS USM: Southern Maine (7-7, 0-2 Little East) scored in its last three at-bats but fell 6-5 to Eastern Connecticut State (11-3, 2-0) in the opening game at Mansfield, Connecticut.

Eastern Connecticut rolled to a 12-0 victory in five innings in the second game.

Courtney Davis went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI for the Huskies in the first game. Jen Lynch was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

ST. JOSEPH’S, JOHNSON & WALES SPLIT: St. Joseph’s (10-4, 2-2 Great Northeast) used a seven-run inning to rally past Johnson & Wales (4-6, 3-1) for an 11-7 victory in the second game at Providence, Rhode Island.

Johnson & Wales scored four runs in the seventh to win the opener, 7-4.

The seven-run third inning for the Monks in the second game came after the Wildcats took a 3-0 lead and was capped by Mariah Harrison’s grand slam.

BASEBALL

AMHERST 10. BATES 9: Andrew Vandini drove in the go-ahead run with a ninth-inning single as the Jeffs (7-6) beat the Bobcats (5-5) in a NESCAC opener at Worcester, Massachusetts.

Brendan Fox went 2 for 4 with two runs and a pair of RBI for Bates. Eric Vilanova was 2 for 5 with two RBI.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH’S 18, MOUNT IDA 7: Elyse Caiazzo had eight goals and an assist to lead the Monks (7-1, 4-0 Great Northeast) past the Mustangs (2-7, 2-4) at Newton, Massachusetts.

Lizzie Calnan had three goals and an assist for the Monks, Mary Leasure added two goals and two assists, and Kat Gadbois and Kelsey Dumont also scored twice.

BOWDOIN 8, BATES 7: Clare McLaughlin’s unassisted goal with 3:05 left lifted the Polar Bears (7-2, 4-2 NESCAC) over the Bobcats (5-7, 1-6) at Lewiston.

Moriah Greenstein scored all three of her goals in the first half as Bates built a 4-2 lead. Bowdoin countered with goals from McLaughlin and Taylor Wilson to make it 4-4 at the half.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 15, BOWDOIN 8: Andrew Melvin and Charlie Fay each contributed four goals and an assist as the Bobcats (5-4, 2-4 NESCAC) rolled past the Polar Bears (1-8, 1-5) at Brunswick.

Jack Allard and Jack Strain each added a pair of goals for the Bobcats.

LASELL 13, ST. JOSEPH’S 9: The Monks (5-4, 2-1 Great Northeast) scored the final four goals but fell short against the Lasers (6-3, 3-0) at Portland.

Casey Sullivan and Pat Egan each had two goals and a pair of assists, and Andrew Suh added a goal and an assist for St. Joseph’s.
