FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount was suspended for the first game next season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

The league announced the suspension without pay Tuesday without saying when the violation occurred.

Blount was arrested in August for possession of marijuana while with Pittsburgh. Running back Le’Veon Bell was arrested for marijuana possession and DUI in the same traffic stop.

The NFL said Blount can take part in all offseason and preseason practices and games.

VIKINGS: The team signed center John Sullivan to a contract extension, giving him a raise and adding one year to his deal to cover the 2017 season.

Dick Wood, the first starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, died Saturday in Atlanta at age 79.

DOLPHINS: Free-agent receiver Greg Jennings is visiting the team, which is eager to shore up its corps of wideouts after several departures this offseason.
