Bird Extravaganza, 7:30 a.m. in Bath

The public is invited to a series of free bird watching ventures sponsored by five conservation organizations in midcoast Maine this April and May. The first outing is April 18 at the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust’s Sewall Woods Preserve and is led by Merrymeeting Audubon. Participants can meet at the CVS in Bath to carpool. Monthly Birding Walk, 7:30 to 9 a.m. in Holden

Bike Swap, 10 a.m. April 26 in Portland

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s Portland Bike Swap will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 26 at the University of Southern Maine’s Sullivan Gym in Portland. Hundreds of bicycles will be for sale, including mountain bikes, road bikes, classic cruisers, kids’ bikes and hybrids. Volunteers will be on hand to help with pricing and bike fitting. The admission is $3, with free admission for students at the University of Southern Maine, as well as for children 12 and under. The swap also features a quick and easy online bike registration system that will make it easier to sell a bike. Those wanting to sell bicycles should register them online at bikemaine.org/swap. Naturalist Training, 10 a.m. April 29 in Holden

Fields Pond Audubon Center welcomes volunteer naturalists to come learn how to lead nature hikes for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary. Content will be provided that prepares volunteer naturalists for the walks, as well as some tips and techniques for success. There are many school trips reserved already on weekdays in May and June. The next training session is 10 a.m. to noon on April 29. The second is from 1 to 3 p.m. on May 1. For more information, call 989-2591.

Whale Tales, 6:30 p.m. April 21 in Wells

York County Audubon is hosting a talk about whale conversation at the Mather Auditorium of the Wells Reserve. The presentation will be given by Dr. David Wiley, the research coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Wiley is leading a multiorganizational study using advanced telemetry and novel visualization software to explore the underwater behavior of endangered whales.
