William Cuevas became the first Sea Dogs starting pitcher to earn a win as Portland beat the New Britain Rock Cats 4-1 on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field.

Cuevas (1-0) allowed one run on four hits over five innings. Pat Light and Kyle Martin each pitched two scoreless innings, with Martin earning the save.

The Sea Dogs (2-3) ended a three-game losing streak.

Jantzen Witte recorded two RBI with a sacrifice fly and a single. Shortstop Marco Hernandez hit a home run in the second inning.

The Sea Dogs jumped on losing pitcher Matt Flemer (0-1) in the first. Mike Miller led off with a double to left field. Carlos Asuaje knocked him in with a triple to right. Asuaje scored on Witt’s sacrifice fly to right.

That was all Cuevas needed. Using a swing-and-miss change-up off his 90 mph fastball, Cuevas struck out five.

“We saw they were super aggressive Monday night,” catcher Mike Brenly said of New Britain. “We wanted to keep them off balance and he was able to do that, throwing (the change-up) in any count.”

New Britain loaded the bases with no outs in the third on two singles and a walk. Cuevas struck out two, then allowed one run on a wild pitch.

Light, who is converting to a reliever this season, struck out four in his two innings. He gave up one hit.

Martin made a second straight scoreless outing, striking out one.
