YARMOUTH — Emma Rohrer scored three goals to lead a potent offense as York rolled to an 11-4 victory against Freeport in a season-opening Class B girls’ lacrosse game Thursday night.

The game was played on the artificial turf field at North Yarmouth Academy because the natural grass playing fields at Freeport aren’t ready for play.

“We had some scrimmages and they’ve all been on turf,” York Coach Jodie Lawler said. “I’m actually looking forward to getting on (real) grass because that’s what we play on. This was great just to get out here and get a game under our belts.”

The Wildcats, who reached the Western Class B semifinals last spring, took control in the second half, holding the Falcons scoreless for the final 25 minutes.

“This was our first game so we were just trying to improve from the first half to the second half,” Lawler said. “In the first half we were bumping them a lot on defense, so we tried to make those adjustments at halftime. We played well. We started clicking.”

Lizzy Martin and Julia Dearden scored to stake Falcons to a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, but the Wildcats reeled off seven goals in the next 16 minutes to open a 7-2 lead with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Freeport got goals from Courtney Broderick and Emily Johnson in the last four minutes of the half.

“We’ve haven’t really focused on the attack at all,” Freeport Coach Marcia Wood said. “We’ve really been working on the defense and trying to get that figured out.”

The Falcons are missing most of the starting defenders from a team that advanced to the Eastern Class B final last spring.

“There are not many returning (players) on defense, but the ones who are (returning) didn’t play this defense last year,” she said. “We’re trying to get them to work together as seven people. We are playing together for bursts but not the whole game, not at all.”

Wood is in her first season as coach of the Falcons after winning four Class A state championships during her 10 seasons as coach at Scarborough.

For the past two seasons, Wood, who teaches in Freeport, has coached the school’s varsity field hockey team.

“Some of these girls are field hockey players and they know me, and the other (players) are getting to know me,” she said. “It’s going to take a little while.”

A lot of York’s top offensive players are missing from a year ago, but it appears there a number of players ready to step into that role.

Allie Lawler scored two goals and had an assist for York. Kate Marshall also scored two goals. Kara Kelly had a goal and an assist.

Kayla Kelly, Erin McKenna and Amanda Lillie each added a goal.

“We hope to have four or five girls who can score, so we can score in any given situation,” Lawler said.

Neither team is scheduled to play again until April 30.

“We’ve got stuff to work on so that’s OK with us,” Lawler said.

Wood echoed those sentiments.

We’ve got some great shooters one (versus) one,” she said, “but we’ve got to get them to see the open person and make the good pass to the open person.

“Right now we’re not working too well as a team on attack.”
