PGA: Jordan Spieth had a post-Masters letdown, shooting a 3-over 74 at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, South Carolina, to end his run of 16 straight rounds under par.

The 21-year-old Texan was eight shots behind leaders Graeme McDowell and Matt Every, who were at 5-under 66. Spieth will need significant improvement Friday to make his eighth consecutive cut.

LPGA: Sei Young Kim shot her second straight 5-under 67 for a share of the lead of the Lotte Championship in Hawaii with fellow South Korean I.K. Kim.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Huang Wenyi shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead in the Shenzhen International in China.

American Peter Uihlein was tied for second with Chile’s Felipe Aguilar, Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and South Korea’s Byeong Hun An.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Jewell Loyd, who is skipping her final season at Notre Dame, was chosen by the Seattle Storm with the first overall draft pick.

Minnesota’s red-shirt sophomore Amanda Zahui B. was taken by Tulsa with the second pick. Seattle took UConn forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis third.

MOTOR SPORTS

NASCAR: A NASCAR appeals panel upheld a penalty against Richard Childress Racing for intentionally manipulating the tires on a car driven by Ryan Newman at Fontana.

The three-panel National Motorsports Appeals Panel reduced the amount of points deducted from car owner Richard Childress and Newman from 75 to 50. The original $125,000 fine against crew chief Luke Lambert was cut to $75,000.

However, the six-race suspensions against Lambert, tire technician James Bender and race engineer Philip Surgen were upheld.

SWIMMING

FINA: Swimming’s governing body wants to give Michael Phelps a special invitation to the world championships.

The 18-time Olympic champion was suspended by USA Swimming from the Aug. 2-9 meet in Kazan, Russia, after a second DUI arrest last year.

On Thursday, he qualified fastest in the 100-meter butterfly in a Phoenix suburb, his first meet in eight months.

2024 SUMMER GAMES: IOC President Thomas Bach has praised Paris as an “exemplary” potential candidate to host the games after meeting with French President Francois Hollande.

Paris, which hosted the 1924 Olympics, is not yet a formal applicant, but the expected bid was endorsed Monday by the city council.

Boston, Hamburg and Rome are already declared bidders.

WBC: Shinsuke Yamanaka knocked out Diego Santillan in the seventh round to defend his bantamweight title in Osaka, Japan.

TENNIS

MONTE CARLO MASTERS: Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka both exited in the third round at Monaco, and Rafael Nadal continued his road to recovery by overcoming John Isner in three sets.

Federer made too many mistakes in a 6-4, 7-6 (5) loss to Gael Monfils after Wawrinka – the defending champion – was routed 6-1, 6-2 by Grigor Dimitrov.
