A 54-year-old man died after falling from a third-floor apartment porch on Wednesday afternoon, Portland police said.
Lt. Robert Ridge said crime scene investigators determined that the man had gone outside a third-floor apartment at 563 Cumberland Ave. to smoke a cigarette and the balcony railing he was leaning against gave way.
“He fell through the railing on the balcony,” Ridge said.
The man landed in the backyard of the apartment building. Ridge said he did not know if the man lived in the apartment building or was a visitor. He said the investigators’ report contained no details of the man’s injuries.
Ridge said the victim was a longtime city resident, but would not release his name until his family has been notified.
The accident was reported to police around 3 p.m.
