FALMOUTH — Unbeaten Cape Elizabeth played a near flawless third quarter to roll to an 19-11 win against Falmouth in a Western Class B boys’ lacrosse game Tuesday night.

The defending state champions connected on 8 of 9 shots during the 12-minute period to break open what had been a close game.

“That was one of our best quarters this year,” Cape Elizabeth Coach Ben Raymond said. “We moved the ball well. We actually tried some plays we hadn’t done in a game before. It’s nice to get them into the game and be successful.”

The score was tied 9-9 a little more than two minutes into the second half when the Capers (6-0) embarked on a 9-0 run to move into an 18-9 lead with less than nine minutes left to play in the game.

“We know every game we play against Falmouth is going to be a tight game,” Raymond said. “Whether it’s represented on the scoreboard at the end, it doesn’t matter. That’s the closest game we’ve played all year long. They played us tough all four quarters. They made us work.”

The Yachtsmen (5-2) appeared to be in trouble at the outset as Cape moved into a 5-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game.

Jack Scribner scored four of his seven goals and had an assist to help Falmouth move into a 7-7 tie with less than two minutes left in the first half.

“Coming out 5-0 wasn’t that great for us,” said Griffin Thoreck, who scored six goals and had three assists for the Capers. “We kind of got away from some things, but we had to work to get out of it. We had to get hungry and we were poised to keep going forward after that.”

The Capers moved into an 8-7 lead when Thoreck eluded a defender and deposited the ball inside the right post with about a minute left in the second quarter.

The Yachtsmen stayed close for the first few minutes before the Capers pulled away for good.

“We chipped away at it, and we got back into the game in the first half, and then it got away from us again,” Falmouth Coach Mike Lebel said. “Their experience and talent just showed in the second half, and our inexperience bit us.”

Cape held Falmouth scoreless for nearly 15 minutes during the third and fourth quarters to take control.

“At times, we found ourselves in the wrong places and making the wrong passes,” Lebel said.

Ben Shea, a senior attackman, had seven goals and had three assists for the Capers.

Owen Thoreck, one of three brothers on the team, scored three goals for Cape.
