NFL: First-round draft pick Brandon Scherff signed his rookie contract with Washington, which drafted him with the fifth overall pick.

The Patriots signed free- agent linebacker Dekoda Watson. The team did not release terms of the deal.

Watson, 27, played in 70 games and made 120 tackles in five seasons with Tampa Bay, Jacksonville and Dallas.

Despite a season-ending injury, rookie Dante Fowler Jr. has a fully guaranteed contract, a four-year, $23.5 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The third overall selection in the draft last month, Fowler tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a rookie minicamp Friday and will miss the season. Beforehand, he signed an injury protection waiver that guaranteed the Jaguars would negotiate in good faith.
