WELLS — Maddie Rouhana had three hits, drove in two runs and scored three times Thursday to lead Falmouth to an 8-4 victory against Wells in a Western Maine Conference softball game.

Rouhana also played exceptional defense at shortstop.

“At first I thought (Wells pitcher Allie Duplisea) was hard to pace, but then I figured it out and timed it,” said Rouhana. “I think the team caught on with that, too.”

Falmouth (5-4) did most of its damage in the third and fifth innings, scoring three runs each time.

The Yachtsmen’s No. 9 hitter, Shannon Burks, started each rally with a walk and a stolen base.

Falmouth Coach Ray Fox said he likes to put Burks in the ninth spot because she’s a freshman who won’t have to feel the pressure of batting higher in the order. And if she gets on base, she can steal to get in scoring position for the top of the order.

After Falmouth opened a 4-0 lead in the top of the third, Wells (4-6) answered with three in the bottom half, including a two-run double by Sam Bogue.

But the Warriors lost a chance for more when daring baserunning backfired.

With one out, Bogue at third and Lexy Haye at first, Haye was caught in a rundown on an attempted steal. Rouhana tried to run Haye back to first but when Bogue took off for home, fired to catcher Jess Collins, who tagged out Bogue.

Haye took second, then tried to sneak to third, but Collins came up with a strong throw to complete the inning-ending double play.

“One of those plays happened to us during preseason so I was just waiting for her to turn and go so I could time it,” said Rouhana. “That’s something we work on in practice and (Rouhana) executed it perfectly. It was good to see,” said Fox.

Julia Treadwell of Falmouth allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits, walking four and striking out five.

“Julia is starting to pitch really well,” said Fox.

“When she hits her spots, she’s tough to beat. She’s a very good pitcher.”

Treadwell also had two hits and an RBI.

Duplisea pitched four-plus innings and allowed five runs, all earned, on just three hits.

She walked five and struck out one.

Duplisea did have a good offensive day with two hits and two runs batted in.

Elizabeth Walker had a pair of hits, two RBI and two runs for the Yachtsmen.

“(The game) was shaky at times but we battled through that, and we came out the last four or five innings and played well. It was good to see that,” said Fox.
