NEWCASTLE — Pitcher Abby Farrin turned in her best performance of the season to lead unbeaten Lincoln Academy to a 7-0 win against Morse in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference softball game on Friday.

Farrin, a senior, allowed two hits and struck out eight as the Eagles won for the 10th time to move into first place in the Western Class B standings.

It was the first shutout of the season for Farrin, who threw 58 of her 75 pitches for strikes.

“Abby keeps us in every game,” Lincoln Academy Coach Tom Nelson said. “She’s tough. She doesn’t let anything bother her, and she comes back every pitch and battles.”

Farrin, who never went to a three-ball count, kept the ball in or near the strike zone.

“I try to move (the ball) around,” she said. “Inside. Outside. High and low. As a hitter, I know it’s hard to hit anything that’s not all down the middle. I like to throw a lot of drop balls. That’s usually a ground out and I trust my defense.”

Lincoln Academy returned much of a squad that went 14-2 last spring to earn the second seed in the regional tournament, before falling to No. 7 Fryeburg Academy in a quarterfinal game.

“We still have a lot of improvement to make,” Nelson said. “We found out our weaknesses in our playoff game last year, so we’re working on them every day.”

During Friday’s game, the Eagles came up with big hits while cashing in on nearly every mistake by the Shipbuilders (5-5).

“You can only give them three outs,” Morse Coach Will Laffley said. “If you give them more than that, they’re going to take advantage of that.”

The Eagles scored two unearned runs in the first inning.

Leadoff hitter Chloe Hallowell reached second base on an infield error, went to third on a ground ball and scored when Miranda Achorn bounced a two-out single over the third base bag on an 0-2 count. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Achorn scored on a single by Alyx York.

Lincoln Academy made it 3-0 in the second when Christine Hilton led off with a single, hustled to third on a wild pitch and, after Taylor Poland walked, scored on a delayed double steal.

“We have some pretty aggressive baserunners and we have some fast people on our team, too,” Farrin said.

In the third, the Eagles loaded the bases on an error, a walk and Hilton’s infield hit, and Poland brought in two runs with a two-out single.

“We don’t have a ton of power, but we have a lot of base hitters,” Nelson said. “We don’t strike out a lot. We definitely put (the ball) in play.”

Lincoln Academy completed the scoring in the fourth inning.

Morgan Achorn led off with an infield hit. She moved to second on an errant throw, went to third on a ground ball and scored on a close play following a wild pitch.

Twin sister Miranda followed with a towering shot over the left-field fence for the Eagles’ first home run of the season.
