NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Sunday was a day of firsts for the Portland Sea Dogs.

Justin Haley earned his first win of the season and Blake Tekotte belted his first home run in a Sea Dogs uniform as Portland defeated the New Britain Rock Cats 4-2 before 4,156 fans at New Britain Stadium.

In addition, Sunday’s victory gave Portland its first three-game winning streak since Aug. 29-31 of last season.

Haley (1-4) entered his start Sunday with a 7.78 ERA, but held the Rock Cats to two runs and three hits in six innings.

He walked one and struck out six.

“He’s coming back from an injury, so it’s really good to see him rebound and kind of get back to the form that we hoped he would have at the beginning,” Portland Manager Billy McMillon said.

This was the longest outing of the season for Haley, who spent a week on the disabled list earlier this month with a leg injury.

“We just had some fun out there,” said Haley, who allowed two-out RBI singles to Tyler Massey in the third inning and Dean Espy in the fifth. “It was good to have a good outing and really lift spirits.”

Portland grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a double by Keury De La Cruz and an RBI single by Tim Roberson, who had nine hits in the series.

The Sea Dogs used a bunt and a blast from the bottom of the order to break a 1-1 tie in the fifth against New Britain starter Shane Carle (5-1).

Jonathan Roof led off the inning by reaching on a perfectly placed bunt down the third-base line.

Tekotte, the No. 9 hitter, then drilled a two-run homer over the right-field fence to give Portland a 3-1 lead.

“(Roof) put down a good bunt,” Tekotte said. “That got things started, got me a good pitch to hit.”

Portland, which came to New Britain with the worst record in the Eastern League, won three of four from the league-leading Rock Cats, who had won 23 of 25 entering the series.

“We come out every day hoping to win and we try to execute correctly,” McMillon said. “We did that this series. The way the guys played is the way we hope they play all the time.”

On Friday, Portland snapped the Rock Cats’ franchise-record 13-game winning streak with a 13-11 win in 10 innings.

“They had a great streak going, but all streaks come to an end,” Haley said.

“We just happened to be the team here to put together some good games. We played them really well. It was just our weekend.”

Roof had another big hit in the seventh when he led off with a double and scored an insurance run on Carlos Asuaje’s RBI single.

“It’s starting to get a little contagious around here,” Tekotte said. “They’re a great ball club, obviously, so it’s huge to get a series win.”

Madison Younginer and Pat Light combined for three scoreless innings in relief.

Light pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the season.

New Britain’s David Dahl went 0 for 4, ending his 12-game hitting streak.

The Sea Dogs have an off-day Monday and start a three-game series at Hadlock Field against the West Division-leading Altoona Curve on Tuesday.
