Talk based on war letters

The Cumberland Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Prince Memorial Library, 266 Main St.

Library director Thomas Bennett will present “Dear Mom: Around the World With the Air Transport Command During WWII,” based on letters written by his father, Sgt. Joseph A. Bennett, during his service with the U.S. Army Air Corps. His journey is recounted through his letters to his mother back home in Maryland and the photographs he took while serving on the back lines in Africa and India.

St Mary Schola concerts

The St Mary Schola ensemble will perform its spring concert “Combat and Carols” at three venues over the next week.

The ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Cathedral of St. Luke in Portland; at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary in Falmouth; and at 7:30 p.m. June 2 at First Parish Church of Brunswick.

‘Maven of Manners’ talk

Social historian Marilyn Solvay of Mount Desert Island will present “The Maven of Manners in a Motorcar” during a meeting of the Union Historical Society at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Old Town House, Town House Road.

Solvay will talk about etiquette maven Emily Post’s road trip to the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915 and how she became the ultimate authority on correct behavior.

Local schools celebrated

The Sanford School Department will host the fourth annual Celebration of Learning from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Gym on Main Street.

The celebration will highlight all of the things happening in the schools and how the community at large is supporting Sanford students.

Students will lead the event. There will be performances every half-hour representing each school, with a variety of presentations. Guests can watch videos, visit exhibits and talk with educational leaders and students from each school.

The Sanford High School Jazz Band will play.

There will be Sanford Vision totes, filled with goodies, for the first 100 people and ice cream coupons will be handed out to students throughout the celebration.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., Our Schools Our Future will host the Family Connection Café with a free family spaghetti dinner downstairs in the cafeteria at Memorial Gym.

AARP safe driving course

Drivers age 50 and older are invited to sharpen their skills and update their driving knowledge by participating in the AARP Smart Driver Safety program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main St.

Participants will be taught defensive driving techniques and strategies, review new traffic laws, rules of the road and more. Maine drivers who successfully complete the course are eligible for a car insurance discount, good for three years.

Bike Through History tour

The North Berwick Historical Society will sponsor Bike Through History, a guided bicycle tour through historically significant sites in the area, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Starting from the Community Center at 266 Lebanon Road, the tour, based on a brochure by a beloved local school teacher, Heidi Porter, will trace the beginnings of North Berwick on Oak Woods Road and progress to Bauneg Beg Pond.

The tour is open to the public at no charge. Refreshments, including liquids, will be available along the way. Rain date is Sunday.

Mystery authors at library

The Scarborough Public Library will host the mystery author event Death in Shorts: Rogue Wave at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The free program will feature a panel of authors whose short stories appear in Level Best Books’ 12th anthology, “Best New England Crime Stories 2015: Rogue Wave.”

The museum store will have its grand opening from 1 to 5 p.m. and will feature the works of local artists and crafters.
