A Bowdoin College student accused of raping a 20-year-old female student on the Brunswick campus over the weekend was ordered held on $5,000 bail Tuesday at his initial court appearance in Portland to face a felony charge of gross sexual assault.

Logan Taylor, 21, of Brunswick had initially been held on $1,000 cash bail after his arrest early Sunday morning, but Judge E. Paul Eggert increased that amount on the recommendation of a prosecutor at the Cumberland County Courthouse.

The judge also ordered Taylor to stay away from the Bowdoin campus, have no contact with the alleged victim and refrain from use of alcohol or illegal drugs as conditions of bail.

Taylor did not say much during the brief court hearing, answering only “yes, sir,” when the judge asked him questions about his identity and whether he understood the charge against him. Taylor wore an orange jail uniform and his shoulder-length hair was tied up behind his head as he stood beside attorney Merritt Heminway, who represented him for the day.

Heminway declined to argue bail on Taylor’s behalf since he was only representing him as the attorney of the day at the courthouse, but objected to the bail amount proposed by Assistant District Attorney Deborah Chmielewski. The judge assigned another attorney, Andrei Maciag, to represent Taylor as the case against him proceeds.

Taylor was not required to enter a plea to the charge since it is a felony. The case has not yet been presented to a grand jury to seek an indictment.

Taylor was arrested in Topsham around 5 a.m. Sunday, hours after the alleged offense occurred, and was turned over by Topsham police to Brunswick police, Brunswick police Sgt. Paul Hansen said Monday.

Brunswick police were first called by Bowdoin College security at 2:34 a.m., Sunday to the area of the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge, a footbridge that crosses the river from Brunswick into Topsham. Bowdoin security asked police to talk to a 20-year-old female student there, Hansen said.

The female student had initially called campus security requesting a ride and told them she was concerned about Taylor, who had been with her earlier in the night.

When she talked further to police, she told them that Taylor had raped her that night on campus. She was taken afterward to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, police said.

The female student declined to comment when reached by phone on Tuesday. The Portland Press Herald does not identify victims of sexual assault without their consent.

Taylor is accused of raping her sometime between 1 and 1:30 a.m. in his dorm room in Coleman Hall, where they had been eating pizza and drinking shots of alcohol. The student told police that Taylor carried her to the bedroom and did not threaten her or hold her down during the alleged attack, according to a police report filed in Taylor’s court file.

“(She) went on to say she did not actively resist Taylor or ‘fight him off,’ but she did not say ‘yes’ to the things he did to her,” Officer Daniel Herbert wrote in the report.

The woman told police that Taylor wore a condom during the alleged incident and stopped when she began crying. Afterward, he left his room and went to the walking bridge by the river, and the woman told police she was worried he might hurt himself. Taylor and the woman continued exchanging text messages even after she talked to police, including one in which Taylor called himself a “monster,” according to other court records.

If Taylor is convicted of gross sexual assault, a Class A felony, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

The U.S. Department of Education tracks crime statistics from every major educational institution and makes them available on its website.

At Bowdoin, where there are about 1,800 students, the college reported six forcible sex offenses on campus in 2013, the most recent year for which data are available.

The college had four such reported offenses in 2012, seven in 2011 and seven in 2010.
