Falmouth firefighters say cigarette butts that were thrown into a pile of mulch likely started a fire Wednesday near an office building in West Falmouth that spread to two parked cars.

Fire Chief Howard Rice Jr. said a 2004 Honda Civic and a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt were destroyed by the fire, which started in a pile of mulch in a back parking lot of TD Bank’s operations center at 70 Gray Road. Firefighters prevented the fire from damaging the building.

The fire was reported at 3:51 p.m.

Rice said the vehicles belonged to employees of the operations center. Several cigarette butts were found in the burned mulch. He warned smokers not to dispose of cigarette butts in mulch or brush, especially on dry days like Wednesday.
