A car went off the Maine Turnpike into a marsh in a wreck early Friday evening in Portland.

State police said the car, driven by Katherine McDonough, 18, of Auburn, was southbound on the turnpike about 6:45 p.m. Friday when she passed an SUV that was in the left lane and then tried to veer around a car in front of her in the right lane.

McDonough’s car hit the car in front of her, driven by Richard Jensen, 51, of Lewiston. McDonough lost control of her car and went down an embankment into a marsh. Jensen’s car hit the median.

State troopers said neither McDonough nor her two passengers were hurt and all were wearing their seat belts. Jensen complained of pain but refused treatment at the scene, police said.

No charges are pending, state police said.
