CAPE ELIZABETH — After losing seven straight times to Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth senior Bryce Kuhn admitted having some doubts about whether the Yachtsmen would beat the Capers during his high school career.

All the doubts were erased in Tuesday night’s regular-season finale.

Kuhn scored a game-high six goals, including the eventual winner with 4:19 to play, as Falmouth overcame a 7-3 deficit to beat Cape 11-9 in a hard-hitting Western Class B boys’ lacrosse game at Hannaford Field.

Falmouth hadn’t beaten Cape Elizabeth since the 2012 regional final, falling to the Capers at that same stage in each of the last two years. Cape Elizabeth had also won this season’s first matchup, 19-11, on May 12.

“A lot of people on the outside see seven games and question the legitimacy of the rivalry, and rightfully so because the only thing that matters is winning games,” Kuhn said. “We responded tonight. Now we know we can beat them, and that’s what really matters.”

The teams could meet for a third time in the regional final in two weeks.

“It’s just nice to know that we can come here and beat Cape on their home field,” Falmouth Coach Mike Lebel said. “Because we’re going to need to do that in the playoffs.”

With Cape (10-2) having already clinched the top seed in the Western B Heal point standings and Falmouth (9-3) locked into the No. 2 spot, Tuesday’s game had no impact on the standings.

Those low stakes seemed to play a part in a low-key first half before the intensity picked up six seconds before halftime. With Cape leading 6-3, Falmouth’s Jack Scribner took a big hit from defenseman Noah Wolfinger that caused a scuffle and led to penalties for both teams.

The halftime break did little to cool tensions as a hit by Cape’s Cole Caswell on Falmouth’s Emmit Zinn 72 seconds into the second half led to another shoving match and more penalties.

“This is our biggest rival, it was their senior night and you could tell emotions were running high,” Kuhn said.

“We really, really don’t like these guys and they really, really don’t like us. Bodies were flying around, people were taking penalties, it was an intense game.”

The big hits, along with a terrific save by Yachtsmen goalie Liam Tucker (10 saves) on a breakaway by Cape’s Ben Shea, woke Falmouth up.

The Yachtsmen rattled off three-straight goals to trail 8-6 after three quarters before Kuhn scored twice in the opening 51 seconds of the fourth to tie the game.

George Gilbert scored the last of his three goals 36 seconds later to give Falmouth its first lead with 10:33 left.

Shea tied the game for the Capers with 4:48 to play, but 29 seconds later Kuhn scored from out front off a great feed from Scribner behind the cage, and C.J. Leighton capped the scoring with 3:11 left.

“It’s hard to figure out,” Cape Coach Ben Raymond said. “Up until today we’ve played really well the past three or four games. Everything was moving in the right direction and then something changes on senior night.

“Give (Falmouth) a lot of credit. They came out and played really well and didn’t give up.”
